Get Revenge

Been digging on the last couple of release by Rvng Intl. of late. They’ve really branched out for the early incarnation with a series of edit 12’s and mixes, all brilliant by the way, to original releases, by quiet a wonderful variety of artists. I’m loving the new Blondes 12 Business/Pleasure, not too sure if you would call it house, but simply it is the best dance record i’ve heard this year!
To the pastoral synth pop of Mirrors to the improvised noises of Julianna Marwick and Ikue Mori, who have both also released records on the spin off label Rvng Flkwys. Quality stuff allround. Plus be sure not to sleep on the re-issue of the little known classic Harold Gosskopf – Synthesist LP, the drummer with kosmiche acts like Ashra Temple and Cosmic Jokers, and a brilliant companion to E2 E4, even though the cover reminds me of a mate who lived in a tin foil covered room.

Check out the website for plenty of info and releases

Their great Soundcloud page offers plenty of samples, including a live recording of Julianna Marwick and Ikue Mori performing last week.

Stone Coal White

Just picked up this release on Shadows CaliTex label. Comp of 2 45s with a few other bits to make it worthy of Lp status. Very raw gritty sound due to the shite recording but it seems to work well. Nearly halarious stereo panning and dub reverbs.

Forest Swords - Riverbed

A new limited edition white vinyl 12" from Forest Swords is set to drop in June. Fjree Feather is actually a re-issue (and remaster) of demo material previously available on CD-R. You can pre-order it now and all your money will be donated to the Red Cross's tsunami recovery efforts in Japan.

Here's a taster:

His Dagger Paths EP was one of the best releases of the 2010 and is still available.

FourColor - Quiet Gray 1

Absolutely beautiful track from Japanese artist Keiichi Sugimoto under his FourColor moniker. This appears on his new album, As Pleat on the fantastic 12K label. Sugimoto uses processed guitar to beautiful effect here, aided by a haunting vocal from Sanae Yamasaki (aka Moskitoo.

Here's some fantastic live footage too

Surfs Up #1

I’ve been a long time surf obsessive, but I’ve actually never been on a board and i’ve not been to Malibu, surf movies and especially the music on the other hand are RAD!! Over the years as I’ve bought foreign 60’s/70’s records the more I’ve been able to see the far reaching influence of bands like the Shadows, from the Asian Surf boom in Thailand and Singapore (where the Shadows had a sold out tour in ’61) to the Eleki scene in Japan (Ventures still out sell the Beatles), onto places like Peru who have a wealth of surf bands. The east has not been left untouched by the surf influence, or should that be the other way round as probably one of the biggest surf anthems by Dick Dale, who was a Lebanese/American, Misirlou or Miserlou to give it’s a traditional Greek name, was first recorded in 1927 by Michalis Patrinos and supposedly comes from Greek refugees from Turkey. This crossover influence can also be heard in the electrification of traditional players such as Omar Khorshid, Aris San and Arif Sag, all bad ass by the by....

So as the Summer starts to kick off i’ll do a few posts about some of my favourite records and from different countries, taking in exploitation records and soundtracks

First up are the Aussie Surf legends The Atlantics, signed and produced by legendary composer Sven Libaek. Libeak’s production adds an incredible experimental edge to the Shadows influenced surf sounds. Check out these few tracks and let me know what you think...

Fatima

no not half of Cathal Coughlan returning to his 90's outfit (great and all that they where)
But new release from Floating Points label Eglo . I really dig on FP's stuff and some excellant deep production here on the new EP for the most wonderful Fatima Bramme Sey, holy crap can this girl sing. my Mrs is goona play this to death....

Cankun

another, yes another new release from Not Not Fun out on download/cassette
i'm digging these kids though, like a cumbria record played slowly backwards through an acid dipped synth....or something like that

Anika - Masters of War

Dylan's 'Masters of War' gets the dub treatment courtesy of Anika. This features on her fantastic self-titled debut album which was produced by Beak> (feat. Geoff Barrow of Portishead). It was released on Barrow's Invada imprint (Europe) and Stones Throw (USA, Japan) last year. There is also a 'dub' version of this track on the record!

Staccato Du Mal

Really digging on the goth synth sounds of Staccato Du Mal, possibly more than his other alter egos like Opus Finis, Xeno And Staccato....over the last few years there have been a whole spat of acts looking back at the whole dystopian 80’s sounds, which is no bad thing, it’s a sound i like and this is the best i’ve heard in a while, great stuff, and just out on Weird Records
If you like dark concrete electro this could be your bag

Thulebasen - Felaia

'Colors have the character of a relativity force similar to some of Thulebasens own sound compositions. The Felaia video tries to bring about an idea of a nature in dystopia, the sun is overburning, the ice is melting and breaking, the ocean is turned upside down, ritual hands are dancing as bodies but are no longer attached to a body. They make no clear signs and draw lines as if to try prophesizing things before they happen. The Felaia video is like thinking of death without going there. A death as a metaphor of the ultimate physical loss of control.' - Stine Marie Jacobsen

Eighties Krautrock Disaster

during the 80's alot of krautrock groups continued, if a little further under the radar, morphing their sound, and some fitting into the rising Cosmic scene. Labels like Sky continued to release experimental electronic records, alot of this music is now very much, lets be kind, of it' time, but some of it i still really dig. here's some current favourites.

Rainfear

Rainfear is improvised electronic music from David Donohoe and Peter Maybury. They take us on an interplanetary sonic expedition mapped out by constantly evolving synthetic circuits, propelling us with their insistent ambient waves, awakening rhythmic sweeps and infinite signal pulses. We are guided safely home with the omnipresent resonance of the joy of being lost in this space.

Lae by David Donohoe

Hopefully this mind-blowing album gets a vinyl release sometime soon. In the meantime you can listen to all 11 tracks here.

Grupo Santa Cecilia

Eveyone knows the big disco remix killer "Africa Bump" by Tom Noble, but im guessing not many know where it came from... well here it is! by "Grupo Santa Cecilia".. what a wonderfully odd piece of music...

Astral Social Club - Snaefell

I'm a big fan of Astral Social Club. Neil Campbell's swirling psychedelic mix of noise and techno is a heady concoction. I was just thinking that it has been a while since I've bought anything by him and then I find this in my inbox - he has a new single coming out on the fantastic, and recently reactivated, Trensmat Records.
Here's the new one:

The Invaders

Really nice song from the album spacing out.. The original on "Duane" is way to expensive but "badass" records re-issued it in the 80s. Generally filed under psych but because its just too dang funky, "jazzman" picked up on it and released this with latin lips on the flip on 7"... cheers Gerald!

Give It To Me Babe

i heard of the label Sacred Bones after picking up the first Gary War Lp (looking forward to getting my mitts on the new one), haven't really explored the whole catolgue too much, but by the sounds of Timmy's Organism i should recify that, nice new wave Suicide sounds.

Animals and Men

Picked up a copy of Dirk Wears White Socks by Adam and the Ants at the weekend, recently had the early singles out for a listen and i didn’t seem to have the LP so nice to pick up. I have always been into Mr Ant, ever since i heard Elastica banging on about the Peel sessions in my youth. (an Elastica single was my first ever musical purchase). On it is this really great track called Animals and Men. The Ants i guess more considered a Post Punk band, but they where there from the off but not really breaking through, i guess having art school sound didn't appeal to the punks. Actually while at art school Adam Ant was a found member of the Monochrome Set.

I came across a band called Animals and Men, via their 45 Terraplane fixation quite a while back, brilliant DIY female led UK group, named after the Ants track. Defo Ants vibe off them with the guitar sound, but with a Pere Ubu/Bo Diddley backing with a gloriously refrained vocal. Check out the Hyped2Death comp for more old sounds and still on the go, check them here.

Hölderlin

Holderlin ‘s LP Holderlins Traum has long been one of my favourite German LP’s. More in the folk vain than say alot of their better known contemporaries at the time, but they found a very suitable home with the Pilz label with acts such as Witthuser and Westrupp, and also sit nicely on my shelf alongside similar artists such as Catherine Ribeiro

Here’s some cool live footage

K-X-P are from Finland. Their self-titled debut album was released on Smalltown Supersound last year.

They will be bringing their dark hypnotic motoriks, buoyant bass anchors, heavy waves of psyched-out progressive synths and echo chamber vocal rants to Dublin's Button Factory on January 20th.

Also, check out this really great oscillating minimal techno mix of '18 Hours (Of Love)' by JD Twitch (Optimo):

45 mixtape #1

new mix for a new year. Decided I get in the game and do a mix of sorts. Pulled out a box of 7's and didn't really get past it, (actually did 3 mixes out of the box). The mix is a bit all over the shop as my filing system, (or lack thereof), a bit of recent not so recent and far from recent and a drop of local.

Putting this together reminded me how much I love 45's. They are a pain to store but once you're hooked it's hard to look past them. I remember DJ Shadow saying there like the crack cocaine of collecting, I used to laugh at this comment but maybe he's right, they're the ones I tend to horde and have I giddy enthusiasm for, never mind those tasty pic sleeves...the instant aural gratification, the almost throw away nature, finding one with a bad ass b-side, the b-side always wins. From funk and soul collectors, to prog psych punk beat nuts, to those mad minimal wave heads to the hip kids buying the newest weirdo bands, not forgetting the impact on Jamaica, everybody loves the 45! Everyone remembers their first. So embracing that spirit here's the first of maybe a series of sorts, it' no 45 King , more a straight mix tape. I'll post up the other 2 in the next week.

Eroc – Fito Linte

Steeple Remove – Radio Silence

Harmonia – De Luxe

Hunter Gatherer – Pere Lachaise

Khonnor – Heat Convex Dreaming

Soft Cell – So

John Foxx – Mr. No

Belbury Poly and Moon Wiring Club – Portals and Parallels

Tussel – Meh Teh

Dynastie Crisis – Le Monde Éclate

Quad Throw Salcrow – Fate Will Find You

TV Resistori – Kammen, Kynsi, Kieli

Blue Orchids – Work

Subway Sect – Don’t Split it

Crystal Stilts – Sugar Baby

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Upside Down

The Fe Fi Four Plus 2 – I wanna come back (from the world of LSD)

The Hollies – I’m Alive

Marie Laforer – Et Si Je T’aim

Happy New Year, gentle readers.
